Hey! I’m John Edgar, and I create images related to life. Family, Kids, Weddings. I love it all. I’m very lucky and humbled to have gotten to where I am in a few short years and I’d really love to take this opportunist to thank all of my amazing couples and also peers who have been supportive over the last while. Owning a small business isn’t always easy and some of the joys of what we do come from the smallest of things!
Where are you located?
At this exact moment in time, I’m located on my couch, in my boxers, watching MTV. My couch is located in the Beyooooooutiful city of Oakville, about 20 minutes outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Most of my photography however, isn’t… I shoot all over the world.
What camera system do you shoot with, and why do you dig it?
Oh man, if Canon needed a poser boy, I’d be it. I rock the 5D and priiiiimes! (Yah, take that Nikon! I said it, primes!). Seriously though, I love the look of shallow DOF to the absolute max. I almost neeeeever shoot above 2.0, you’ll generally find me in the 1.2 to 1.8 range.
What’s your favorite wedding lens?
Seriously going to ask me that, eh? I don’t think I have ONE favourite lens, but honestly I really only shoot 4 lenses. 50mm is such a great focal length; you can’t rely on the gimmick of the lens to make the image interesting. However, I also sport a 24 1.4, 85 1.2 and a 135 2.0, as well as the occasional tilt.
How would you describe your style?
Hmmm, hard question I’m not sure whether my actual style and my described style match. I like to think I’m a bit editorial, very contemporary, with a splash of “contrived.” I also change my style a little to depend on the couple, mood & feel of the wedding. Obviously there is no stylistic formula for every wedding, some just suite one style over another. I’m always looking for different lighting or interesting ways to shoot something mundane.
How do you advertise?
For the most part, my brides find me by referral. I’ve done some advertising on Facebook that has booked me a few weddings. I’m also looking at WedLuxe. It’s a lot of money but I think the payoff will really be worth it. But for the most part, people hear about me from others who have used my services in the past.
Where do you look for/find inspiration?
I freaking looooove commercial editorial/glam photographers. Seriously, they are great. They have a wonderful sense of light, style and composition. Most of my inspiration comes from the commercial world. I’m not afraid to admit that I regularly pull from other wedding photographers around the world. I don’t think it’s fair to say that I blatantly rip them off but I do take ideas and modify them if I like the work… I think that’s OK, right?
Do you rock?
Absolutely…! Rock the casbah… Rock the casbah!
Are you a Mac or PC?
Back in the day I worked in IT designing Novell Networks, I was SOOOOO PC! When I went to college I had to switch to Mac, and man I wish I’d done that sooner. I’m a Mac throughout and through, love you Billy Boy!
What is your editing software of choice?
I’m a using ACR + Bridge for my RAW conversions and then… well, that’s about it, pretty much everything you see on my website or blog is just ACR. J
What’s your favorite flick?
Oh man, awful question, I don’t think I have ONE favourite, so I’ll give you a couple… I really enjoy Fight Club, American History X, Eternal Sunshine, Donnie Darko, Napoleon Dynamite, American Beauty, Garden State, Equilibrium, The Virgin Suicides, Empire Records, High Fidelity, Requiem for a Dream, Girl Interrupted, Juno, Rocket Science, White Oleander, He was a quiet man, Lars and the Real Girl, Eagle Vs Shark.
What do you think of all this talk about video in our future?
I’m too young to remember the Film to Digital switch, but when I hear people speak of it, it’s with reserve and condemnation. I’m glad that the possibility of progression isn’t being feared but for the most part embraced. One thing that people really need to keep in mind is that photography and cinema are NOT the same medium for story-telling, they are not the same concentration AT ALL. Creating a good, interesting video takes as much energy and skill as creating a full session of great, interesting images. I say go for it, it’s always good to learn. But I’d caution you to make sure that you don’t create something that will DEVALUE your staple product. It’s very easy with poorly produced work.
What’s your favorite thing about weddings?
Bridesmaids.
